Jordan

A country between desert and sea - Jordan is a unique destination in the Middle East. The rock city of Petra, an impressive testimony to ancient architecture and a must on every trip to Jordan, has become world famous. Almost as famous: the Dead Sea and the Wadi Rum desert, made famous by "Lawrence of Arabia". For outdoor travelers, Jordan offers many opportunities for hiking, climbing and mountain biking, or camping under a twinkling starry sky.

From Petra to the desert castles: The fascinating history of Jordan

The rock city of Petra is undoubtedly Jordan's most famous landmark. Artistic facades, carved directly out of the red rock, a dream for thousands and thousands of visitors every year - and excellent photo opportunities to boot. The once proud trading city was built by the Nabataeans, who controlled the region's caravan trade in ancient times and created an easily defensible base among the rocks.

Those who are interested in historical monuments from Jordan's turbulent history, however, should not leave it at a visit to Petra. Also worth seeing is the Roman amphitheater in the capital Amman, which once seated up to 6000 visitors. Other well-preserved traces of Roman rule can be found in the Roman city of Jerash in the north of the country. The so-called "desert castles" from the time of the Umayyad caliphate are also easily accessible from Amman as a day trip.

From the desert to the Dead Sea: the spectacular landscapes of Jordan

Whoever thinks of the landscapes of Jordan usually has the Wadi Rum desert with its spectacular rock formations in mind. Known through countless movies, from "Lawrence of Arabia" to "Dune", the desert is definitely worth a visit - for hiking, camel riding or spending the night under countless shining stars.

But Jordan has much more to offer than the desert! The Dana National Park, which is rich in species, or the Aljoun Forest Reserve are ideal for hiking. If you want to swim, the Red Sea near Aqaba in the extreme south of the country is the place to go. The famous Dead Sea should not be missed on any trip to Jordan. A photo while reading a newspaper in the extremely salty water, which keeps you on the surface while swimming, is of course part of it.

Azraq Wetland Reserve: Winner of the Green Destinations Story Award 2023

A small jewel in the middle of Jordan's desert is the Azraq Wetland Reserve. Once a huge oasis, more and more water was pumped out for the capital Amman until the wetland had practically dried up. Thanks to the work of the nature conservation organization RSCN, 10% of the original area has now been restored - and migratory birds are also returning. For its efforts, the destination received the Green Destinations Story Award 2023.

Best time to visit Jordan and travel tips

  • The temperature differences between the seasons are very high in Jordan. While it can easily get over 40 degrees in the desert in the summer, it can get quite cool and damp in the winter and even snow. For active vacationers, therefore, spring and fall are usually the best times to travel.
  • If you plan to do a lot of sightseeing in Jordan, you should get the "Jordan Pass" before your trip, which gives you free or discounted admission to many attractions. It also includes the visa fees that you would otherwise have to pay upon entry.J
  • ordan is basically a safe country to visit, despite its location being surrounded by crisis areas. As almost everywhere, you should still keep an eye on your valuables, especially in very touristy places.
  • There are bus connections and organized trips to many attractions in Jordan. However, to see as much of the country as possible, it is worth getting a rental car.
