There is hardly any other ski touring area in the Bavarian Alpine region that offers ski mountaineers such a varied selection of ski tours of different lengths and difficulties as the Allgäu Alps. The gentle foothills are ideally suited for beginners and pleasure mountaineers, while the main Alpine ridge is reserved for experts, even in the best conditions.

A beautiful, classic route runs from Unterjoch to the Wertacher Hörnle (1684 m) with a stop at the Buchelalpe. Moderately steep terrain leads up to the largely forested mountain; a large forest aisle promises pure downhill enjoyment.

Western foothills: classic ski touring area

The area of the western foothills is probably the oldest and most traditional ski touring area in the Allgäu. Peaks have been climbed here for more than 100 years

.

As early as 1897, the Stuiben (1749 m) was the first of the Allgäu mountains to be climbed. Well-known and worthwhile tours lead to the Mittag (1451 m), the Gschwender Horn (1451 m) or the Immenstädter Horn (1488 m).

One of the most famous mountains in the Allgäu is the Stuiben (1749 m).

Absolute classics can be found in the Hörnergruppe with the Rangiswanger Horn (1616m), the Sigiswanger Horn (1527 m) and the Ofterschwanger Horn (1406 m).

For those who like a lot of vertical metres and long, challenging ski tours, the Nagelfluhkette is the place to go. It is a whole 15 km and around 1500 metres of altitude in constant ups and downs along the mountain ridge from the Hochgrat (1833 m) to midday.

The ski tour is a great way to get to the top of the mountain.

Front and rear Ostrachtal

The Ostrachtal is divided into the front and back Ostrachtal valleys. In the front valley, the ascents lead mostly through steep, dense forest, such as on the Heubatspitze.

In the back valley, powder snow fans get their money's worth: Numerous medium to difficult ski tours with high peaks and beautiful powder slopes await winter sports enthusiasts in the area.

In particular...

The ski tours in the back of the valley are particularly popular with powder snow fans.

The Schochen (2100 m), the Grosse Daumen (2280 m) and the Grosse Wilde (2380 m) are particularly popular and are climbed from the Giebelhaus.

Around the Nebelhorn - beautifully relaxed tours

The area around the Nebelhorn is the perfect place for those who want to reach high altitudes without having to climb much. The Nebelhorn cable car makes it easy to reach the alpine terrain.

Most tours start with a short descent or a long traverse and end after climbing the summit with a wonderful long descent into the valley, like the Große Daumen (2280 m) or the Laufenbacher Eck (2178 m).

Some tours end far from the starting point, but you can always get back to Oberstdorf by public transport.

For those who want to cross the main ridge, the Heilbronner Weg from the Rappensee Hütte to the Kemptner Hütte is recommended. In summer, the trail is hiked by up to 500 people every day, while in winter it offers solitude and tranquillity.

Due to the long approaches and steep, often rocky summit ascents, the mighty Allgäu Main Ridge is one of the most demanding touring areas in the entire Alps.

High peaks, deeply gouged, steep ravines and furrowed flanks characterise the landscape of the mountain range. All tours are only possible in safe avalanche conditions with level 1 and stable snow weather with ice-cold nights.

Well prepared for a ski tour

Whoever is planning a tour should inform themselves well in advance about the current avalanche conditions and the difficulty of the undertaking.

In addition, winter sports enthusiasts should respect the mountains as a natural habitat for plants and animals and behave accordingly. Then nothing will stand in the way of absolute winter fun.
